A new parish was born in a rather dramatic fashion in the Philippines last week.

On Bright Saturday, April 23, the community of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the city of Bacoor, Luzon Island, celebrated its first Divine Liturgy, followed by the Baptism of 26 people, reports the Russian Orthodox Diocese of the Philippines and Vietnam.

The Sacraments were celebrated by the local dean Hieromonk Alexei (Lapshin) and two local rectors. The community in Bacoor has been headed for many years by the starost Nikolai Kanopen, a former bishop of a non-canonical denomination who converted to Orthodoxy.
